A landgasthof is the Swiss equivalent of an Aussie or British country pub and they’re nearly always called Bären , Löwen or Kreuz ). This one in the Emmental village of Sumiswald is my favourite – both for accommodation and for eats! I’ve stayed and eaten here a number of times over the years and had some of the best rösti of my life here. On a recent trip in autumn we had an excellent meal of local venison served in several courses for the table to share. Good wine list and the breakfast buffet is fabulous too!

If you travel to Lucerne by car coming from Bern do not hesitate to stop over in Summiswald. The Landgasthof is a remarquable restaurant in a great setting. A true must in the all region.
