By far my favourite hut of the Haute Route. Incredible hike up, amazing views from the hut, really friendly and helpful staff who provided yummy dinner and breakfast. Cabin was busy with Haute Route hikers, day hikers and people exploring the glacier - some had alarms going off from 0330 so do get an early night or bring some ear plugs 😁
Excellent refuge overlooking the Moiry Glacier. Each dorm room in the new building has a window with a view of the glacier. There is also paid hot water showers and a dryer room for laundry. Not sure about some of the comments about drinking water - we just refilled from the faucets in the bathrooms.
This review is for a 4-person dorm overnight stay in the new building. I did not walk through the larger dorms in the older building. I had some issues with Cabane de Moiry, but there is a lot of good to say first. The views are spectacular and worth the effort to get here. The sitting area at the end of the dining hall with the big windows overlooking the glacier is a great feature. The chairs are not so comfortable. And the thin cushions they provide are pretty useless. The staff was great. We interacted with three of them and they were all very patient with us non-French speakers. Very helpful and nice to deal with. The 4-person dorm was very well set up. Each bunk had a small shelf for personal items like your phone, glasses or watch. The dorm had one charging port, which was fine as our plug has four USB outlets. There is also a large bench that runs the length of the dorm as well as storage cubicles for more personal items. There were 32 bunks on the floor and two toilet rooms and one urinal room. Each with their own sink. There is a men’s and a women's shower room with three sinks and one shower in each room. Three beers on tap. Dinner was good and we were happy with the portions and selection. Breakfast, not so much. No eggs and no meats. Only one type of cereal and it was not very good. It wasn’t granola or cornflakes, but some kind of seed thing. I forced it down because I needed to eat something. The water issue. I fail to see why they can not provide potable water to guests. At least to paying overnight guests. They have potable water for the kitchen and I saw them pouring out of a tap. Assuming it is the same water source as the non-potable sinks and showers, it must be getting filtered. There should be no reason they can’t install a filter system to allow for a potable water source in the dorms. Zero. It’s 2024. Zero excuses. Technology and logistically, this is not a difficult problem to solve. It only needs to be to a single faucet, not every sink. If they did this, they would have more space on the helicopter to bring up meats and eggs, for example, as they would not need to fly in water. How much is the water? $4 CHF for a small pitcher of tap water or $12 - $14 CHF for bottled water. My other big issue is no wifi and no credit card payments. Again, in 2024 there is no excuse for either of these two conveniences not to be available to paying guests. After all, the staff has wifi as the woman who checked us in was using an iPad to review our reservation and check us in. There is no excuse for lacking these two customer service amenities in 2024. They are simply choosing not to provide these amenities. With all that said, we did have a pleasant stay. This could be a 5-Star cabane if they fixed their customer amenity problems I mentioned here.
