Gasthof zum Bären : Königstraße 8, 71679 Asperg

I came here with my family - a group of 10 adults and 2 kids - we reserved in advance as it was a Saturday evening. We all arrived separately, and one person of the reservation was only asked if we were all vaccinated. No COVID-19 certificate of any kind was asked - UNACCEPTABLE. Minus 1 star for not adhering to the local laws and regulations during a pandemic. The restaurant was way understaffed - it looked like two waitresses and one manager. It took a long time to order anything. Prices are relatively high for a restaurant in a small village… but the portions are huge. The dishes are not very specific. Some dishes came with a side salad, and some with the salad with the main dish on the same plate. This created a bit of confusion as some people could eat a salad appetizer and some could not. Also, the putensteak with broccoli sounds healthy, until you find it covered in some kind of cream sauce. The same goes for when you order cauliflower - also covered in some sauce, something children do not necessarily like. The fries were extra ordinarily salty - which is good to ensure guests order more to drink — but again, it was impossible to order more drinks as the restaurant was understaffed. One drink fell over on our table, and we had to most of our napkins to clean up the mess. We ran to the waitress to get more. What was a bit unacceptable was no additional table mats were provided, nothing to clean the table , and no additional clean silverware. Luckily we had some baby wipes to clean the table and sticky silverware. Again, we could not order a replacement drink until the waitress came to collect the empty plates. FYI - if you order food for children not on the kids menu, they will still charge you an adult price. If you substitute something for the children in their adult dish, they are still charged in addition. I found this a bit frustrating. Minus another star. All in all, the food is good - sometimes too salty, portions are way too big , dishes don’t always list everything , no covid certificate ask for or checked , higher than average prices, high waiting times, and understaffed.

Hotel review - I filtered my search for free parking, free breakfast, free wifi and air conditioning. Google maps listed all these amenities were included. After checking I quickly discovered the Gasthof Zum Barren only offers free parking and free wifi. There is no breakfast or AC. This place is good for a night's stay but nothing noteworthy. The misleading info in the Google details about amenities was very frustrating. From now on I'll call and attempt to verify even though meine deutsch ist nicht so gut.
